Intercultural Private Estate Wedding

Gisele & James from Canada chose the sun-kissed island of Crete to celebrate their love for each other with a romantic ceremony and reception at a fairytale Traditional Private Estate. This amazing venue was actually chosen for them by James’ parents who came to the island first & after visiting the estate with us, fell in love with its breathtaking natural beauty. They just knew it was the perfect setting to bring Gisele & James’ dream destination wedding vision to life and the couple couldn’t have been more thrilled with their excellent choice! James’ mum, who is herself Greek, was also truly invaluable to the couple during their wedding planning, helping & advising them all the way. Gisele was able to put her trust in both us and her future mother-in-law without the slightest doubt. This was the first time in our 11 years of destination wedding planning that we’d had the groom’s parents taking such an active role in the planning of the wedding and we knew from the very first moment we met them that with such adorable parents & parents-in-law, the couple themselves must be very special people indeed! We weren’t wrong!

James' parents' precious help was later gratefully acknowledged in the moving speeches at the couple’s wedding reception.

Gisele & James thoughtfully chose both pre & post wedding events for their guests, to offer them the full-on Crete experience! A fabulous dinner by the sea before their big day and an amazing boat trip to the picturesque village of Loutro, only accessible by boat, for afterwards. And after organizing such an exciting programme of events for the wedding party, we simply couldn’t resist joining them to share in the fun…we even brought along the couple’s brilliant wedding photographer too, because we knew there was sure to be some unforgettable moments that just had to be captured on film!

The happy couple chose to incorporate both their Greek & Lebanese roots into their inspirational wedding in Crete. Following a shot of Cretan raki, the ceremony began, with their 5 bridesmaids & 5 groomsmen by their side. Traditions from the Sofreh Aghd ceremony included the bride & groom sitting in front of a mirror beneath a canopy held up by members of the bride’s bridal party, with the mirror representing eternity. Sugar cones were rubbed together above the canopy, signifying showering the happy couple with sweetness and the couple then fed one another honey from their little fingers to symbolize feeding each other nourishment & sweetness throughout their lives together. For the Greek part of the ceremony, wedding crowns ‘stefana’ joined by a ribbon were placed on the heads of the couple by their best woman. The ribbon symbolizes the unity of the couple. Greek ‘koufeta’ or sugared almonds in delicate organza bags were also given out to the guests after the ceremony in Greek tradition, symbolizing happiness, health, wealth, children and a long life. We love combining two different cultures in our unique destination weddings!

Gisele & James’ wedding reception took place in the estate’s charming square under the olive trees strung with fairy lights and with the main tree swathed in white muslin, creating a super romantic natural backdrop. A carefully chose wedding dinner followed and in keeping with James’ Greek roots an ‘evil eye’ wedding favour awaited each guest at their place setting, which tradition says protects the holder from bad luck.

Gisele & James chose to further show their love & appreciation to their guests with a cool open bar serving cocktails & premium liquor…what better way to toast to the newlyweds’ future happiness! Then came the cutting of the eye-catching cookie wedding cake. Always a ‘sweet’ moment!

The wedding entertainment for the evening had it all! Traditional Cretan dancers, a live Greek bouzouki band and an awesome DJ. Not forgetting the celebratory fireworks that took everyone’s breath away!

The whole of the wedding ceremony & reception was beautifully captured on film, video & drone so all those precious moments can be enjoyed over & over again.

Gisele & James were a truly delightful couple who hit it off instantly not only with us but with all of the first class vendors that we helped them choose. Head over heels in love, their caring, kind-hearted characters shone out from start to finish and added an extra touch of joy to an already exquisite wedding celebration in Rethymno. Both planning the wedding and the actual day itself was a nothing short of perfect for us & everyone involved.
