Majestic Orthodox Wedding, Rich In Tradition

LOCATION: Crete

We were thrilled to play a part in Emerald & Kostantine’s amazing Greek Orthodox wedding in Crete and we knew straight away that it was going to be totally awesome! Their fabulous Greek island wedding was a dream come true for this gorgeous young couple from Florida whose families are both Greek and who now live in New York. Emmy & Kostas (as their family & friends call them for short!) travelled from the USA with many of their family & friends to take their vows in the magnificent setting of a grand Orthodox church in Crete. The couple especially chose this particular church, the largest & finest in the town, because of its stunning opulent interior and because an impressive total of 4 priests would be conducting their very special ceremony. Poignantly, Emmy’s father is also a priest and so in a moving addition to the wedding day, was able to take part himself in his precious daughter’s wedding ceremony.

Emmy got ready for her big day at her beloved aunt’s house in the charming old town area of the town and then walked to the church with her nearest & dearest accompanied by traditional music from local musicians, in true Cretan style. And what a breathtaking sight they made, with gorgeous Emmy in her elegant fairytale wedding gown with its sweeping train & her beautiful sparkling tiara…a true princess fittingly named from the Greek word ‘Σμαράγδα’ meaning literally the precious gem ‘Emerald’.
In keeping with their Greek roots, Emmy & Kostas were married surrounded by 3 generations of their loved ones along with 8 gorgeous bridesmaids & 3 cute flower girls. Coming from a family of 10 children, Emmy certainly had no problem when it came to choosing those most cherished people to surround herself with on the most important day of her life! Unusually, the bridesmaids all wore white which was Emmy’s wish and they looked absolutely fabulous in their elegant floor-length dresses. They also all had their hair styled to match in graceful sleek buns.
Combining both American & Greek tradition, as well as having a best man and maid & matrons of honour, also standing up beside the couple in this majestic church in Crete was Emmy’s sister who played the important role of ‘koumbara’ or best woman. Each part of a Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony in Crete has a significant meaning. Ceremonial wedding crowns, Greek wedding candles & wedding favours were all part of this beautiful ancient ceremony with all its beauty & rituals.
After their stunning wedding in Greece, the newlyweds & their guests celebrated with a fantastic dinner & reception party at a spectacular venue in Crete with breathtaking sea views. Following a splendid wedding dinner came the touching father & daughter and mother & son dances which brought a tear to everyone’s eye!

The celebrations then continued with lively Greek & Cretan dancing to live music from a popular local Cretan band followed by partying into the night to a DJ with all the latest sounds.

A truly exquisite Orthodox wedding in Crete!
